About the Options for Our Leveling Instrument
In the previous blog post, “What is a Leveling Instrument?”, we introduced our leveling instrument (product name: Automatic Precision Leveling Stage Auto Stage ASW-21). To briefly review, the task of placing a surveying instrument—which is a device used for investigating the shape, size, height, and positional relationships of land and terrain—in a level position (aligning the vertical axis of the surveying instrument with the vertical axis of the installation point) is called “leveling.” Our leveling instrument is equipped with a stage that can automatically perform this leveling task. In other words, when a surveying instrument is mounted on our leveling instrument, the surveying instrument is automatically leveled.

Since today’s theme is “options,” we will introduce customized features that respond to customer requests.
First, regarding the types of options, they include: the type of power supply, whether operation can be performed with a switch on the front panel, whether the power automatically shuts off after leveling operation is completed and a certain time has passed (with the stage on top remaining fixed), or whether the power remains on in standby mode (in which case, if the stage deviates from the horizontal state during standby, leveling operation restarts automatically), and so on.
Leveling Instrument Option Items | ||
---|---|---|
Item | Details | |
Power Supply | Internal Battery | External DC12V Supply |
Switch Operation | Enabled (○) | Disabled (×) |
Automatic Power OFF | Yes (○) | No (×) |

Next, we have organized in the table below examples of option combinations that we provided in response to customer requests.
Leveling Instrument Option Combination Chart | ||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Main Category | Sub Category | ASW-21 (Standard) | ASW-21A | ASW-21B | ASW-21C | ASW-21D |
Power | Internal / External | ○ / ○ | ○ / ○ | × / ○ | ○ / ○ | × / ○ |
Switch Operation | Enabled (○) / Disabled (×) | ○ | ○ | ○ | × | × |
Auto Power Off | Yes (○) / No (×) | × | ○ | ○ | × | × |
As shown in this table, you can see that customer applications vary widely.
On the other hand, aside from the leveling work for surveying instruments, we also provide the ASW-21S, an option that modifies the stage shape in order to support measuring instruments, such as our digital levels, which require sensor leveling. Whereas the ASW-21 stage has holes drilled into it to fix surveying instruments via jigs, the ASW-21S stage provides a larger flat space. As introduced in the previous blog post “Is the measurement environment ready for a digital level?”, proper sensor leveling is originally done on flat, stable bases such as a surface plate, which is resistant to environmental and time-related changes. However, surface plates are heavy and difficult to carry due to the need to prepare installation sites. With the ASW-21S, on the other hand, the stage can be automatically leveled and easily transported, making it a substitute for a surface plate.

So, that was an overview of the options available for our leveling instruments. What do you think? The above are only some of the examples we have provided. We will be happy to discuss and consider options tailored to your applications, so please feel free to consult with us anytime.
